Benjamin Peters Hutchinson familiarly known as "Old Hutch," at one time the greatest opera tor on the Chicago Board of Tra?e, with property rated but two years ago at ten millions of J mars, is now in his old age re duced to utter poverty. He was in the days of his success a kind-hearted man, often advan cing a large sum to save some un lucky speculator from bankruptcy and ruin. Even in the days of his greatest prosperity he expended but little on himself, living in mean style in a little room on the rer Moor of the Board of Trade where he slept and , ,,rked his meals. It was on the ih of April, 1S91, when financial r-.iin overtook him. There was on that day a great drop in corn, of which he had on hand many millions of bushels and his fortune began melting away. Since that time his speculations have all r roved unfortunate and now in his old age, he is reduced to abso lute poverty. It has been quite a - 1 Uanir 4 V. -ll t Vl 1 pet m 1 n o:1 change to have become the p.. crest. The massacre of a large num ber of Italian laborers and the wounding of many more by a body of French laborers at Aigues Morte, is a deplorable event and a shame to the officials and the AI.KEAT DAILY! now ir it;rTt T. .t tm the society edttor. the t -! rl reople of France. In Italy, and l,-..n in Germany, intense excite ment has been caused by this wholesale massacre. It is not be lieved, either in Italy or in Ger many, that it was owing to ill-will to the Italians as competitors in labor that led to this' savage mas sacre ; but the outbreak, it is thought, was due to political causes. The unfortunate men, it is believed, were attacked and slain because they were citizens of a country, which as a party to the tripp'.e alliance, were leagued l.r Than a Vorr ml t dllor- 114 Work . Thousand ! and Mb ;! Oat Our I mm-. Cor. of The Mordant. -a HrraM. In a great newspaper office, system is indispensable. The work of collecting and exhibiting the news ot the world tor one day in the regular and compact form it occupies in the morning paper is indeed a Herculean task, and the result of this daily accumula- tion and display of news as ex hibited upon the pages of the ll'crlJ represents the constant toil and care of a thousand skillful workers under its gilded dome and the co-operation of thousands more throughout the county, who, as correspondents, forward ac counts of every interesting oc currence in their respective locali ties. From the outsice world the news pours into the office in a con stant stream telephone conncc lions exist of course, with all im portant citv institutions, such as Wall street, the police and fire departments, &c. : long distance 'phones bring voiced news from Boston, Buttalo, Chicago, Phila delphia, Washington and all the larger cities; from 5 to 15 tele graph operators snatch messages from as many throbbing wires, and through pneumatic tubes and bv special delivery are received the dispatches of the Tress Asso ciation. This association is the principal newsgatherer, and serves nearly all the larger papers with routine news. The president's or Oueen's messages, proceedings of parliament or congress, mardcrs, sporting or society news and the general happenings of the day are all transmitted to the paper through it. This accounts tor the striking resemblance so often noticed in different newspaper articles. To deal with this irregular mass of facts, rumors and prophetic streaming in from every q-iartcr r.f th- trlohe and boil it all down into the terse paragraphs which appear next day in print require? the division of the office force into distinct departments, and these are still further divided into sec tions the result being an elabor ate though effective organization the members of which work to gether as harmoniously as the . 1 a ft. editor or the tore rttttof. & cording to the kind l ellt they engage in.
